The Post Office sends out post vans to collect mail from mailboxes, used by private [[citizens]] to send mail, and directly from [[companies]] and city [[services]]. The collected mail is stored in the Post Office until it is sent either to an [[Outside Connection]] or a Post Sorting Facility. In addition, the Post Office will store mail received from outside connections or the Post Sorting Facility as "Mail to Deliver". Without the local Post Sorting Facility, all mail sent from the city is transported to Outside Connections as long-distance mail and only mail coming from Outside Connections can be delivered within the city.

Once a city has a Post Sorting Facility, this facility receives {{icon|unsorted mail}} unsorted mail from the city's post offices & outside connections prior to sorting the mail into two categories: local and global mail. {{icon|local mail}} ''Local mail'' is sent by post trucks, 25 ton capacity [[Vehicles|semi-trucks]], to the city's post offices to be stored & delivered to citizens, companies, and services in post vans, 2 ton capacity service vehicles. {{icon|outgoing mail}} ''Global mail'' is exported by post trucks to outside connections via roads. Mail stored in buildings as "Mail", as opposed to mail goods carried in vehicles, is converted to tons at 1000 mail to 1 ton of {{icon|unsorted mail}} Unsorted, {{icon|local mail}} Local, and {{icon|outgoing mail}} Global mail. As an example, the default Post Office has a storage capacity of 100,000 mail which, if starting at full, 50 post vans carrying 2000 mail or 2 tons of mail each would need to depart the office to empty its storage. Post vans do not separate their inventory between local mail being delivered and unsorted mail they pick up to return to the post office.

While there are icons and references to {{icon|unsorted mail}} unsorted mail and {{icon|outgoing mail}} outgoing mail (aka global mail), the only visible good in the game appears as {{icon|local mail}} local mail regardless of the source and destination. As an example, mail sent directly from an outside connection to a Post Office always appears in vehicles & cargo facilities as {{icon|local mail}} local mail.
